Ukraine finds Canon EOS Rebel T6i in Russian Drone

Russia uses Canon Camera in UAV

Ukraine finds Canon EOS Rebel T6i in Russian Drone recently. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has released a video recently that revealed many things that many private investigators would find interesting regardless of what their feelings are regarding the war in Ukraine. Numerous sources have reported on this which will be

A Ukrainian soldier disassembled an unmanned Russian military surveillance drone. The camera found in the drone was a Canon DSLR that most photographers and even private investigators would be familiar with.

There was a video published by ArmyInform that is about 2 minutes in length.  He sits next to the UAV (unmanned ariel vehicle) that apparently crashed in Ukraine.  The UAV is said to be a Russian Orlan-10.

After reading other reports on this video it is said that the soldier was a little surprised by how basic and how limited technology was used for the drone itself.  The soldier apparently even comments on how the drone is more reminiscent of a hobby plane rather than a military-type drone.

Now I didn’t understand what he was saying in the video but after leveraging Google Translate I was able to read the comment section.

Many of the commentators laughed at how basic the Orlan-10 was while others kind of applauded how they were able to make something functional without paying gobs of money for their UAVs.

Canon EOS Rebel T6i in Russian Drone

Canon EOS Rebel T6i, Velcro, Bottle Cap, and Duct Tape

The Canon camera model within the drone was a Canon EOS Rebel T6i which is a pretty decent and affordable camera. I guess you can say a lot of bang for the buck. PiAdvice.net is familiar with the Rebel line of cameras as we own a Canon Rebel T3i. I share more about this in another article about cameras I have used as a private investigator.

There are still plenty of Canon EOS Rebel T6i’s in the used market if you are in the market for one yourself.  Just think you can say you have the same camera that is used in Russian drones.

The camera is mounted to a metal plate and strapped down with velcro as you will see in the video clip.

Some other things noticed were the use of a plastic bottle which appeared to be where the fuel compartment was located and the equivalent of duct tape used on the drone itself.

How Much is this Fancy Drone?

A news agency out of Ukrain stated that this type of drone costs about $87,000 to $120,000 to make back in 2017.

I am not sure how accurate this is as it could be Ukraine making it seem as though these drones are more expensive than they really are. Or, it could in fact be accurate as other militaries have been known to overpay for equipment. Based on the technology within these drones, one could make an assumption that Russia isn’t paying a great deal of money to put one of these together.  It could simply be a case of making the best of something with little resources to support it.
