In the small town of Leesburg, Flordia, a town with a population of approximately 20,000 people, Mary Lucille Turner, age 53 was charged on June 1, 2022, and arrested for insurance fraud.
As reported by Leesburg-News.com, Turner placed a claim for water damage on January 27, which happen to be the same day she changed her deductable with USAA from $5280 to $500. The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) with USAA investigated the claim and determined that she had filed a claim with a home warranty company identified as Old Republic Home Protection Company a week prior on January 19th. To make matters worse, the investigator also determined that a plumber was sent to check on the leak on January 26th. It was not determined if the plumber fixed the leak or not.
The Bureau of Insurance Fraud further investigated the incident and found out that the plumber was indeed sent to Turner’s house on the 26th and discovered the water leak.
The SIU investigator passed on information to the Bureau of Insurance Fraud regarding the timing of lowering the deductible and filing the claim stating that she stated she was not aware of the water leak prior to the claim with USAA.
When questioned by the Bureau of Insurance Fraud about the timing of the claim and previous claim, she appeared to backtrack and state she had “Gotten her words twisted.”
Turner was placed under arrest for insurance fraud and is listed as being released on a $4,000 bond.
Opinion From the Writer on the Investigation of Mary Lucille Turner
Insurance companies are always looking for a signal of concern where a claim may not be above board. Sending an SIU investigator is usually the first step in clearing up any misunderstandings and getting a more detailed account of a claim. Asking good questions helps an investigator get the right answers.
When turner indicated she had no prior knowledge and then the information was found contradicting that information, she really put herself in a bad situation that may follow her for a long time.
Insurance companies want to pay good claims for their clients. And investigators are there to figure out if they are paying good claims. Turner will find herself in court and will have to defend all the recorded interviews she had with the investigators but is innocent until officially proven guilty.
